UK Extends Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Advisory List with 11 Destinations
British authorities has added eleven more destinations to its official alert list concerning the risks of methanol poisoning from adulterated spirits.
This expanded warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "an international surge in the frequency of reported cases" of industrial alcohol poisoning.
Only last month, the government had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current register, following a number of high-profile events such as the fatal death of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being advised that as little as tiny quantities of methanol can cause permanent eye damage or loss of life within 12–48 hrs.
What is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?
Methanol is a poisonous substance commonly employed in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint thinner. It is not meant for human consumption.
While it is naturally produced during the production of spirits, reputable manufacturers bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the purification method.
However in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into beverages to cut costs, and as it is tasteless and scentless, it is very difficult to notice.
Authorities' Guidance for Travellers
Authorities minister Hamish Falconer said that each tourist should recognize the indicators of toxic alcohol poisoning.
"If you're consuming alcohol abroad, choose reputable establishments and refrain from homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," Falconer said.
"In case something feels off, for example a fatigue that's way worse than usual or sight issues – get medical help fast."
The full register of destinations noted as posing a risk of toxic alcohol contamination now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
