The Latest Mayhem Mounts Update Brings Forth a Beautifully Chaotic Fresh Weapon to the Game

The winter game drop for the block-building phenomenon has arrived — and it features the first new weapon introduced into the game since the heavy club made its debut. The lance is now available and it has the potential to revolutionize your approach to Minecraft, especially if you love chaos.

An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides

The Mayhem Mounts update also adds several new features and updates centered around animal mounts in the game. That focus made the spear the natural choice for this release, as the development team had already known it was time for a new weapon.

"From the outset, we understood that we wanted a new weapon that would increase combat distance, and we designed it specifically for mounted combat," noted a senior product manager. "We tried out a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both felt great when we ran our trials and also looked good for the use case."

If you're asking yourself whether fighting from a saddle means you can charge at your allies on steeds, the answer is a resounding yes. In fact, there's even an attack perfectly suited for it.

"Mounted lance combat] is a major applications for the spear, and it's incredibly enjoyable," the developer says. "The spear has two attacks: You have the jab attack, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a sprinting strike where you couch your lance and deal more damage [with] the more momentum you have. So [it’s] tailor-made for jousting on horses."

Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration

The wild enjoyment can extend beyond there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've visited The End, the developers have an even more ridiculous idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] excellent for strapping on the elytra and going out and making some real mayhem," she suggests.

In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now real, and it should be made an competitive event right away.

Another significant inclusion in this fresh content is the Nautilus. This aquatic being, which is inspired by the seashells players have gathered for years, can be tamed and ridden for underwater travel. Not only will it carry you through the water quicker than swimming, it'll also conserve your breath meter, so there's no necessity to return to the surface for fresh air.

The remaining new features are mostly things that seek your demise, as is the way of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a undead nautilus appearing in the water, often with a Drowned on its back. If you are able to defeat the Drowned, though, you can befriend the undead mount — or the standard version, for that matter — with a puffer fish.

"We've pondered this challenge for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it felt like the perfect moment to also unveil something for underwater," the developer clarifies. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a several proposals for aquatic rides that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked striking, and we have the tie-in to the Nautilus shell that was pre-existing in the game."

She also adds that there are actually a pair of variants of undead nautilus: standard and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] provide diversity to what you find underwater."

Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks

Other additions include the Parched, biome-specific skeletons that can withstand the sun, which means there's no getting away from them if you end up in that biome. Sometimes you'll see them on camel husks, another new mob. These passive, zombified camels have an notable look that sees their ribs poking out. The same goes for undead steeds, who have a comparable exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be encountered after dark with a spear-carrying undead rider on their back.

The final pair of items on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some much-anticipated changes to riding horses. Now, you can traverse rivers and lakes while mounted on a horse. Additionally, netherite horse armor is now craftable at the workbench, so you can provide your steed with the top-tier safeguarding it deserves.

A Spicy Send-Off for the Year

All told, the last content update of the year is a pretty good one. The spear by itself — and the mayhem it enables — would have felt like a considerable upgrade. Throw in the Nautilus, and more things trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.

The Mayhem Mounts content drop is available for all major editions of Minecraft.
